Divorce

“I hate divorce,” says the LORD God of Israel. Malachi 2:16a (NIV)

 I pass this command along (not really I, but the Lord): A wife shouldn’t leave her husband. If she does, she should stay single or make up with her husband. Likewise, a husband should not divorce his wife. 1 Corinthians 7:10–11 (GWT)

You have heard that the law of Moses says, “A man can divorce his wife by merely giving her a letter of divorce.” But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.  Matthew 5:31–32 (NLT)

“Haven’t you read the Scriptures?” Jesus replied. “They record that from the beginning ‘God made them male and female.’ And he said, ‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ Since they are no longer two but one, let no one separate them, for God has joined them together.” Matthew 19:4–6 (NLT)

Jesus replied, “Moses permitted divorce as a concession to your hard-hearted wickedness, but it was not what God had originally intended. And I tell you this, a man who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery—unless his wife has been unfaithful.”

 Jesus’ disciples then said to him, “Then it is better not to marry!”

“Not everyone can accept this statement,” Jesus said. “Only those whom God helps. Some are born as eunuchs, some have been made that way by others, and some choose not to marry for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven. Let anyone who can, accept this statement.” Matthew 19:8–12 (NLT)

Above all, love each other warmly, because love covers many sins. 1 Peter 4:8 (GWT)

Finishing is better than starting. Patience is better than pride.  Don’t be quick-tempered, for anger is the friend of fools. Ecclesiastes 7:8–9 (NLT)

Here is my advice for people who have never been married and for widows. You should stay single, just as I am. But if you don’t have enough self-control, then go ahead and get married. After all, it is better to marry than to burn with desire. 1 Corinthians 7:8–9 (CEV)

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted;
he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.Psalm 34:18 (NLT)

Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.
Psalm 62:8 (NIV)
